Approaching the Midpoint to the Season

It's hard to believe that after this Thursday's game against University School, we will have played eleven games - half way through the season - with eleven games remaining.  Presently, we are .500 at 5-5.

Of course, we'd like a few plays back and a few minutes here and there - and don't get me started about our fourth quarter struggles.  Yet we have been more than competitive in every game, we've played.  We can only learn from our mistakes, and move forward.

We have made progress yet there's much potential still on the table.  Once we put it all together for a full game, we will be tough to beat.

One tool that's been invaluable in the learning process has been Hudl.com.  After games, I upload the game film to our Hudl online account.   Players can access the game films at anytime, even from apps on their smartphones.  It's easy to create highlight films and share with college coaches via email.  As coaches, we can telestrate with arrows and embedded comments that players can see.  Without question, film study accelerates learning, which translates to greater success on the field.

This Thursday, we have a great opponent in University School.  Our players know their players personally and many considered WRA.  Historically, "Beat U.S." has been a cheer for many decades.  For our alumni, there's nothing sweeter than a victory over the "Preppers."

Both J.V. and Varsity will depart at 3:15 - for 5:00 p.m. games - and return around 7:30 for super late dinner in the dining hall.

On Saturday, we will depart at 8:00am - for varsity's 3:00 p.m. game versus Detroit Central Catholic. On Sunday, we play Culver at 9:30 a.m. We expect to be back on campus around 6:30.  Students will miss classes on Saturday - speak to your teachers!

3d Spring Break Florida: Monday Update

Only 28 hours (or so) into the trip - and we are already a better team.   Not surprising after after 3 intense two-hour sessions with 3d Lacrosse.

Last night, we practiced after an afternoon settling into the hotel, napping, and relaxing at the beach and pool.  The boys were pumped to play under the lights - and showed up ready to play.  It was exciting to have Captain Alex Spring back at practice after his broken hand.  3d's Bart Sullivan, former DI coach, offered advice during drills.  The boys seemed to enjoy Notre Dame's Cadet drill, working hard on transition and clearing.

This morning at 6:45, we began with a little a.m. yoga stretch and polar bear dip in the Gulf of Mexico - team bonding exercise.  After a hearty breakfast, we boarded our coach bus for a 45 minute drive to the Premier Sports Complex. DJ Nick Hylant helped start the day right with some good tunes. In the morning session, Bart Sullivan and Jamie Munro, the founder and CEO of 3d Lacrosse (also a former DI coach), shared generously with our defensive and offensive players, respectively.

We broke for an hour and ate lunch under a giant tent fit for 400 person wedding.  According to the boys, the food's been "awesome" - coaches agree.  In the second session, we worked on more shooting, clearing and riding, fast breaks, and new rules to 3v2 basketball that forced the players to "read the play."

Tonight at 8 p.m., we scrimmage Berkshire under the lights.  Looking forward to seeing our boys be "play makers"!

More tomorrow....We'll keep you posted.

Coach O'Brien

P.S. To your left, you'll see our twitter feeds - @coachobrienk has twit pics - and we will have some video clips of tonight's scrimmage.

and their boarding passes printed!

Players on both flights will MEET AT 5:45 a.m on ELLSWORTH PATIO - the morning of March 11th - and we will travel via school buses* with the girls team to the respective airports.

*There will be a $20 charge for this bus - a standard fee for airport transportation.  (Family discount is 2 for 1 - $20.)

Especially SINCE WE ARE LOSING AN HOUR OF SLEEP - REMEMBER We SPRING FORWARD that weekend March 11th at 2 a.m. for Day Light Savings Time - I would like all boarders to say in the dorms the night before we depart.  Everyone needs a good night sleep - it will be a long day Sunday - we play that night under the lights.

Since we are flying together, representing WRA, I would like our boys to look nice when we travel - casual dress.  Ideally, polo shirt, khaki (or non athletic) shorts (or pants) - flip flops or sneakers are fine.
Please NO sweat pants, tshirts, pajamas... while we travel.

ON March 16th - we will need to organize carpool teams to pick up players.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  1. What airport do we fly into?
Tampa International Airport is the closest major airport to St. Pete Beach. It is approximately 40 minutes to the hotel from the TIA. 3d Lacrosse provides ground transportation from TIA to the Postcard Inn on the Beach. We will also have a staff member in the airport to meet arriving campers and transport them to the hotel.

  2. What time can we get in our rooms?
Check-in time is at 4:00pm and check-out time is 11:00am. Early check-in and late check-out may not be available, so we highly encourage campers to plan their travel schedules accordingly. Arriving at the Tampa airport at 2:00pm or after is ideal.

  3. What is the first meal included in the program? What is the last meal provided?
The first meal provided to you will be dinner on arrival day.
The last meal provided will be breakfast on departure day.

  4. When is our first and last practice?
Your first practice will be at 6:00pm the evening of your arrival.
Your last practice will be at 8:30am on your departure day.

  5. How much supervision will there be?
3d Lacrosse provides 1 coach for every 10 campers. There will be roll calls before every practice session, a “code of conduct” that campers will need to abide by for the duration of camp, bed checks every night before “lights out”.
3d Lacrosse reserves the right to send any camper home who does not adhere to the code of conduct. Coaches will be on-call each night for any problems or emergencies that may arise.

  6. How many WRA coaches will be traveling?
Three coaches for the boys, and three coaches for the girls will be there all week.  (Mr. Haller at some point as well as Mr. Burner may visit for a few days.)
Players on both flights will MEET AT 5:45 a.m on ELLSWORTH PATIO - the morning of March 11th - and we will travel via school buses with the girls team to the respective airports.
Coach Rauhauser will be on the Airtran Flight.
Coach O'Brien will be on the Continental Flight

7.What if my son/daughter has a medical condition/allergies?
3d Lacrosse will have a certified athletic trainer on staff. If your son/daughter has any special medical needs, please make a note of it on the medical form we provide. If your son/daughter has any food allergies, please include that information on your medical form as well so we can make sure to have appropriate.

8. How much spending money do you recommend?
3d Lacrosse provides three full, buffet meals a day; however, campers are always hungry after their evening session. Many want to order pizza or buy snacks from the camp store. $50-$75 is recommended.

9. What should we pack?
See packing list - below.

10. Are cell phones allowed?
Yes, cell phones are allowed at this camp.

BE SURE TO Double CHECK YOUR FLIGHTS - and your Airline's baggage policy!
